The World is Round – or is it?

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Hello Lovely People

Now for some basic astronomy.  Do you remember how we were taught in school that the planets orbit around the sun, and the moon orbits around the earth?  The impression was created that although the orbits of the planets have different radiuses and velocities, they each orbit in a perfect circle around the sun.  That is not quite true.

The orbits of the planets resemble the wanderings of a drunken fly – around the sun, but not in a perfect circle.  The fly would follow a circular path, and then maybe retrace its steps before resuming the circular path, or maybe go outwards and then return again to the circular path.

Various beautiful crop circles have been found to resemble these fascinating orbital patterns.

We are aware of the major planets that orbit around the sun – and even that knowledge is changing all the time.  For example, we were taught that there were nine planets evolving around the sun, including the earth and Pluto.  However, in 2006 astronomers voted to downgrade Pluto to the category of “dwarf planet”, along with more than 40 other planets in our solar system.

This gives us an indication of our level of ignorance about what is happening in the world around the earth.

What the Mayans discovered thousands of years ago, was that even these uneven orbits can be predicted.  They made their predictions to cover literally thousands of years accurately, based on their observations of the night skies.

If the Mayan Long Count Calendar is correlated with the Gregorian calendar, then it can be calculated that the world was created on 13th August 3114 BC. – or was that just the beginning of an era?  The Mayan Long Count Calendar ends on 21st December 2012.  This day is “the end of time” – that is the end of the Mayan Long Count calendar as translated to the Gregorian calendar.

The Mayans knew that around December 2012 there will be a specific alignment of Jupiter and Saturn on either side of the sun.  This alignment only occurs every 5 125 years.

Is this an exact date?  I don’t think so – not because I claim to know better than the Mayans.   We know that we operate on a 24-hour day and that this day starts at Greenwich Mean Time.  Greenwich is in England, and Australia is on the other side of the earth.  The same day starts in Australia once the earth has completed an orbit around the sun, which is 24 hours later.  So which 21st December 2012 are we talking about – the English one or the Australian one?  Time is relative, and we are talking about a time frame rather than a specific date and time.

I can hear some people say yes, but why would we attach so much value to the opinion of one ancient tribe?  What if their calculations were wrong or not relevant?

Wait for the next instalment.

A Calendar Ends

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Hello lovely people

Recently I went on holiday and fell in love with the Greek Islands.  It was one of the best holidays I ever had, until it was time to go home.

The last leg of my return journey was summarily cancelled as a result of the fallout of volcanic ash from Iceland.  This is where everything became surreal – as if it was a dream that I was living.

Thankfully my experience was an interesting dream rather than a nightmare.

But first some background on what is happening to the world.

People are talking about 21st December 2012 being the end of the world.  There are more and more books appearing on the topic, and everything seems to be getting more and more confusing.

Here is my version of the changes that we are experiencing:

Much of the fuss about 21st December 2012 relates to a Maya calendar that ends on that date.  The Mayans were an ancient civilisation that lived in what is today known as Mexico and Central America.  They were a highly evolved society at the time.

The Mayans believed that time binds the various dimensions of the Universe together.  They used several calendars to explain the ties between the planets and our earthly existence.

The Mayans also believed that time

  • Can be measured
  • Does not stand still
  • Flows away from the past into the future
  • Is circular and cyclical
  • Is expressed by events that are repeated in different cycles.

The Mayans used three different calendars. The most significant one for the purposes of this article is the Long Count Calendar. This calendar was used to record past events and predict future events. It completes a cycle of more or less 5 125 years.   This calendar ends on 21st December 2012.

Some doomsday preachers believe that the reason the calendar ends on that date and there is no new calendar to replace this one, is that the world will come to an end on that day.

Is it time to prepare for the apocalypse from Revelations?  Wait for the next instalment.

Perish the Thought of Ever-lasting Peace 2

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Hello Lovely People

Think back to a situation that you can describe as your own war.  Was it a war where you were a soldier?  Or was it an argument, or a conflict situation that you did not enjoy at all?  Was it inner turmoil where you had to make peace with some changes in your life?

Here is the interesting question: what did you gain from the situation?

One of the main things I have gained from war – even if it is just conflict with another person, is an appreciation of diversity.  We are not the same.  There are a few billion different people on this planet.  Every one of us have something to contribute to humanity.

I have experienced inner conflict situations where I assumed that various people were the enemy.  I have on many occasions been surprised to discover empathy and compassion in others, and this has taught me humility.

Conflict situations have allowed me to experience gratitude for what I have and for what I have gained from the conflict.  I have learnt to look for the upside of every conflict situation and for the downside of every situation that was based on an infatuation with a person or circumstances.  As a result my life has become far more balanced.  I have learnt to control and manage my emotions, rather than allow strong emotions to manage me.

Have you noticed that with any conflict you get to a point where you have clarity of vision?  You move above and beyond the conflict and as a result you see the so-called bigger picture.  Suddenly you realise how petty and insignificant your conflict is, and you experience the relief that goes with peace.

Have you ever had conflict with a love partner, and as a result experienced even deeper love based on increased understanding?  Now there is a moment of peace that I would not exchange for anything.

Looking back at my life, conflict has allowed me to cut ties with people and move on.  Often we hold on to people to the detriment of everyone involved.  Conflict allows us to let go and grow into greater things.  Sadly, we hardly ever stop to thank our opponents for allowing us to leave them behind.

Conflict also often forces us to change direction.  Remember that vicious boss who eventually made you resign in desperation?  Remember how you got a far better job which allowed you to grow and learn more about yourself?  Imagine still being stuck in that going-nowhere-fast relationship and not meeting the next person who was ready for the new you.

War and peace do not only happen between countries.  We have war and peace inside of our selves and around us on a daily basis.

Next time you wish for peace, remember that peace will not last.  Neither will war.  We need peace as much as we need conflict.  That is the purpose of our existence here.

Of course needing conflict does not mean needing to kill other people.  Just step back and see what you can learn from yourself about the conflict.  Then thank your opponent for the lesson and move on.
