Feast of St Basil - Orthodox

Saint Basil was born in 330 AD in Cesarea in Asia Minor, as one of six children.  All his siblings became priests, bishops and nuns in the Church.  He studied in the great cultural centres of the world, and became one of the greatest writers and speakers in the Christian Church.

He became the Bishop of Cesarea in 370 AD.  He formulated the rules and regulations that still apply in most of the Christian monasteries of the world.   He also prepared the current Divine Liturgy.  He loved children and was the first bishop to establish orphanages and hospitals and old age homes.

He died on 1st January 379 AD.
