Saint Brigit was known for her generosity to the poor. She once gave away all her mother's butter, which was then replenished in answer to Brigit's prayers.
Apparently St. Brigit went to the King of Leinster to ask for land to build a convent. She thought that the place was perfect for a convent. There was a forest with firewood and berries, a lake nearby that would provide water, and fertile land. The king refused to give her any land.
Brigit asked God to soften the king's heart. Then she asked the king: "Will you give me as much land as my cloak will cover?"
The king had a good laugh but thought that her cloak would only cover a very small piece of land.
He agreed and Brigit spread her cloak on the ground. She asked four friends to each take a corner of the cloak and walk in opposite directions. The friends walked north, south, east and west. As they walked, the cloak grew and covered many acres of land.
The king realized that she had God on her side. He knelt before Brigit and promised her and her friends money, food and supplies.
The king converted to Christianity and commissioned the construction of the convent. Also see Imbolc
