This is a multi-faith day that originated in 1887 with Presbyterian and Methodist women, who were joined by Baptist women in 1891.

Later women from the various other denominations joined and today the day is celebrated

internationally on the first Friday of March.  The service for this day is written by a different country every year. That country is the focus of the world's prayers on the day itself.

The day begins at dawn on the islands of Tonga in the Pacific Ocean and ends 36 hours later on the island of Samoa, circling the world in 36 hours.  The day of prayer originated from a concern for women and children in a male-dominated world in the late 1860's.

The purpose of the day is also to focus on the role of prayer in mission work.
