Upadhyaya is celebrated on the fourth day of Navapad Oli. Upadhyaya knows all twenty-five Jain Agams consisting of eleven Anga and fourteen Purva, which form


his twenty-five attributes.

The Anga consist of

  • Eleven canonical texts compiled by the Ganadhar or followers of Tirthankar (Arihant),
  • Twelve canonical texts compiled by Shruta Kevalis
  • One scripture of proper conduct and
  • One scripture of proper practice

Upadhyaya is responsible for all academic activities in the Sangha. Followers eat boiled mung only, to celebrate the colour green which is associated with Upadhyaya, and pray, worship and meditate for Upadhyaya during the day.
