Breaking Down Boundaries

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Hello Lovely People

My name is Elsabe.  My grandmother was named Elizabeth, but I was the first grandchild and my parents wanted to be original.  The result?  I have a unique name, there was hell to pay in the family because of the audacity of my parents, and my siblings ended up with strings of family names that they do not use because they are all known by their nicknames.

I think that was an early sign of me breaking down boundaries and surging ahead into unknown territory.  Is it a matter of a fool rushing in where angels fear to tread?  I don’t think so, but then I am biased.

I recently had one of those experiences that would not be more bizarre if you make them up.  I have a British passport, but also still carry my South African passport.  I travelled to South Africa for a short break.  Legislation requires me to use my South African passport when I am in South Africa.  I also need to have my British passport available, because part of the job of airport officials is to ensure people have the correct travel documents for their destinations (like a South African passport with a valid visa or a British passport if you travel from South Africa to the UK).  If they slip up, people are deported back to their place of origin at the expense of the airline.

When arriving in South Africa, I went to an international foreign exchange agency to exchange £60 for South African currency.  This is not a large amount of money, and should not have aroused suspicion.

When asked for my passport, I was not sure which one to use (I normally do the exchange in the UK or use a credit card) and made the mistake of providing both passports.

The clerk looked at my British passport and then asked for proof of residence.  I provided my British driver’s licence which is acceptable throughout the European Union, and in many other countries including South Africa.  But not for this company.

They then looked at my South African passport and demanded a visa that would justify my visit to my country of birth, in addition to two legal passports and a return ticket.  I soon realised that I was getting nowhere, and left without the money.

I went to the next company, provided only my British passport, and got the money within minutes.

These people, as well as my parents, were obliged to enforce boundaries.  It does not matter that the boundaries are artificial and impractical.  The boundaries are there, and in their minds overstepping those boundaries would have dire consequences.

No matter how well educated we are, we grow up in systems and cultures that tell us to obey the rules and face the consequences. As a result we understand from a very young age that we must do as we are told, and that the control is outside of us – with other people that have authority over us.  End of creativity.  End of audacity.  Beginning of lifelong pandering.

Of course people break out.  They use the opportunities that are given to them, and they use their God-given brains and various talents to make the world a better place for themselves and for others.  They become entrepreneurs, artists, inspired achievers in the fields that they are passionate about.  They also often become lonely, because people start to revere them.

The result is a class system, where one class looks up to another and protest about the class differences.  The “upper” class does not necessarily look down on the “lower” class.  However, they know what happens when you accept boundaries without question, and they shy away from anything that would put a damper on their creativity.

Once you have tasted the freedom of breaking rules and expanding your personal territory, amazing opportunities open up for you.  Each opportunity is a test of your ability to conquer fear and each success brings you closer to the self that you were born to be in this world.

And I am not saying do as you please in all circumstances.  We are social beings and we need to be aware of how our behaviour impacts on others.  There is no need for anyone to deliberately hurt other, but there is also no need to blindly obey rules based on the fears of other.

I wonder what those foreign exchange clerks would say when they hear about the three occasions when I was illegally in other countries?  Each time a border policeman helped me on my journey (one accompanied me to safe territory at his own risk, one was bribed to let me in and one pretended not to see me) and I had a wonderful time because I refused to see the obstacles and went for the opportunities.

But that is a story for another day.  Go and find your boundaries and start breaking them down.

Please Make Me Happy

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Hello Lovely People

I sometimes get requests from people to help them move to the UK, because they are so unhappy where there are, for various reasons. For example, a man does not like his job in Jordan and sends his CV to me so that I can find him a job in England. Or a woman does not like the cultural constraints on her behaviour and actions in Egypt and wants me to help her find an English boyfriend. Or a man in South Africa hears how happy his friends are in England, and decides to move after them and share their happiness.

The one thing that these people have in common is that they want other people to make them happy. They do not know yet that happiness comes from inside, and not from other people.

To put it another way, they feel trapped in their situation and want to escape at all costs to the land of milk and honey, wherever and whoever that is.

Guess what? These are the immigrants who find fault with everything in their adopted country. They cannot find what they came looking for, and go back to their homeland, even more disillusioned than when they arrived in their adopted country.

This happens when someone does not understand one of the basic laws of nature, namely that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. They live in a bubble of unhappiness and they do not even notice the positive aspects of their situation.

Every situation, no matter how “bad” it is, has two sides. And we have two options in terms of how to deal with the situation. We can focus entirely on the downside, and find lots of evidence that we are right. Or we can deliberately search for the upside of the situation – because it is there if we care to look for it.

For example, to escape from an unpleasant job my friend has developed a hobby that he can make money from. That will combine his passion with his economic need. He can practice that hobby in Jordan or in England.

The lady could find an English boyfriend and be at his beck and call, so that she can survive in England. How does that differ from being at the beck and call of a man in her own country based on her own culture? She already has many means of coping with her current situation but does not recognize them, because she is looking for a solution from someone else.

And the South Africans who want to come to England in search of happiness? Until they have resolved their emotional issues about their own country, they will not be happy anywhere else in the world.

If you are unhappy where you are right now, look for the exact opposite of what causes your unhappiness. When you find it, a chemical reaction will take place in your body, and you will change permanently – for the better.

Our Roots in Outer Space

Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

Hello Lovely People

Have you ever wondered why it is that pyramids that were built in the same era can be found in Egypt, Rome and Peru to name but a few? How did people in such diverse locations manage to apply the same knowledge at the same time for the same purpose? And how did they manage to position those perfectly cut stones that in some instances weighed more than a ton?

And did you know that the Dogon tribe in West Africa as well as the Zulus in South Africa tell about their ancestors who arrived from outer space? Why would such people tell the same lie for thousands of years? But that is not a good question, because we all are aware of some lies that are still believed after hundreds of years.

I have always known somewhere deep inside of me that there was some truth behind Greek mythology and the Greek gods. For one, those stories are just too coherent and spectacular to have been the imaginary creation of primitive people.

I have now discovered that all the stories from Greek mythology are repetitions of similar tales from clay tablets that were discovered in the Middle East, and that pre-date Greek mythology by a few thousand years.

Those stories about gods fighting against each other with thunder and other dangerous stuff, gods flying around in flying machines and so on turn out to be not stories, but recordings of real events.

The more I read about this stuff, the more I realize that there are the gods who at some point ruled the earth, and there is a God of Love who created more than we can ever comprehend.

This is truly humbling stuff on any scale.

How to Buy Some Salvation

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Hello Lovely People

One of the many questions we have to answer as a result of the impact of these planetary changes on our lives, is how we will respond to a crisis.

For example, let’s say you live in the UK and you hear about a massive earthquake in Australia. Will you wonder how you can help those people, or switch channels on TV?

If the earthquake is in South Africa, you might think “That is where Elsabe is from, I hope her people are OK. Let me go and load the dishwasher during the commercial break.”

If the earthquake is in Egypt, you might feel a slight constriction of fear in your throat and thin “I had better give a few bob to a charity – buy some salvation while I still can. Oh yes, and – poor people! I hope that they will get at least 10% of my donation after commissions, taxes, admin fees and other ways to lose money.”

If the massive earthquake is in London, you will not have much time to switch channels or escape in another way. What will you do? Will you take the lead or desperately search for a leader? Will you do what your hand finds to do or find someone to blame? Will you share what you have, or plunder? Will you wait for the government to bring out new legislation on how to deal with an earthquake, or follow your own inner compass?

I know, this is still a hypothetical situation. I was recently put to the test when I was stranded in the Czech Republic and had to find a way back to the UK. Believe me, that was a quick way for me to discover how I deal with massive crisis. Here are more details on Volcanoes and Other Eruptions if you are curious.

How do you deal with crisis? If you are not yet ready to follow your intuition, what fears and prejudices do you still need to resolve? How about starting to work on them today? Contact me if you need to talk about personal support.

Perish the Thought of Ever-Lasting Peace 1

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Hello Lovely People

What would an Israeli ex-soldier, a Northern Irish child of peace fighters, an Arab with terrorist siblings and a product of South African apartheid have in common?

Would you expect all these people to demand peace and denounce war?  Probably.

However, here is a completely different take.

Think back to the last time when you had a moment of complete peace.  Can you remember what you experienced?  Was it stillness, or bliss?  Can you remember the calmness?  Now imagine that your moment of peace continues for a long time – like five years with no interruption.  Wouldn’t that be nice?

I thought not.

I made a list of the drawbacks of such a long spell of peace.  My list included a lack of personal growth.  What do we learn from the good times?

Of course there would be no challenge, because everyone will agree that this peace is wonderful, and there is no challenge in similarity.

Just the thought of all this makes me feel bored already.  I do not particularly enjoy fighting or arguing, but I cannot imagine that a long period of being unchallenged by anything will be anything less than boring.  It is great to feel placid and quiet, but as the saying goes, too much of a good thing is no longer good.

Have you ever had a real fight on your hands and then experienced peace afterwards?  I can remember many instances where I achieved that peace, and enjoyed all of it.  If I did not first experience the conflict, I would probably not have appreciated the peace.

I actually enjoy having my attention and energy focused on some objective.  There are times when I simply focus on clearing my mind so that I can receive creative thoughts and energy.  What if I receive all that energy and I am so at peace with myself and the world that I just allow the energy to flow away through my fingers?  Possibly once, maybe twice, and after that I will get itchy.  That is my nature.

I feel that everlasting peace will be a denial of life.  We do not live in a world where there is always peace.  Even when we live in a peaceful country, we always experience some inner turmoil based on love, work or social relationships.  If no other people are involved, we still have some sort of inner turmoil.  Life is about not having peace and always striving towards peace.

Of course there is another side to every situation – like a coin which always has two sides.

To be continued
